What to Expect at Your First RMT Appointment
Your first visit is a 45 or 60-minute appointment. It starts with a conversation, and your RMT explains each step before any hands-on work begins. Your comfort comes first. Your RMT will explain the treatment process and you can ask questions or request adjustments at any point during your appointment.
Your RMT will discuss your health history, current concerns, and treatment goals, then assess relevant movement, muscles, joints, and areas of tension to help guide your care.
1
Assessment
Your RMT will explain what they found during your assessment and how it may relate to your concerns. Together, you'll discuss treatment options, goals, and what to expect during your appointment.
2
Education
Treatment is tailored to your assessment, goals, and comfort and may include therapeutic massage, myofascial techniques, trigger point therapy, stretching, and other hands-on approaches. Pressure and treatment techniques can be adjusted based on your comfort and preferences.
3
Treatment
When appropriate, your RMT may recommend stretches, exercises, or movement strategies based on your goals and show you how to perform them comfortably between appointments.

Registered Massage Therapy FAQs
-
No. You can book an appointment with a Registered Massage Therapist without a doctor's referral. However, some extended health insurance plans may require a referral for reimbursement, so it's a good idea to check the requirements of your individual plan before your appointment.
-
Direct billing is available for many extended health insurance plans. Coverage and direct-billing eligibility can vary by insurer, plan, and practitioner, so we recommend confirming your coverage before your appointment. If a claim cannot be processed directly, you may be required to pay for your appointment and submit your receipt to your insurer.
-
No. People visit an RMT for many reasons, including muscle tension, stiffness, restricted movement, soreness from work or exercise, recovery from an injury, or simply to support comfortable movement and physical well-being. Your RMT will assess your concerns and discuss whether massage therapy is appropriate for your goals.
-
Not necessarily. An RMT appointment can include reviewing your health history, assessment, discussing findings and goals, hands-on treatment, and recommendations for movement or home care. The amount of time spent on each component will depend on your needs and the type of appointment you book.
-
Your comfort and consent are important throughout your appointment. Your RMT will explain the treatment approach and you can ask questions, request changes to pressure or positioning, or ask to stop or modify a technique at any time.
-
The right choice depends on your concerns, goals, and how much assessment or treatment may be needed. Practitioner profiles can help you compare each RMT's approach and areas of interest, while appointment lengths may vary by therapist. If you're new to Sprout or aren't sure what to book, contact the clinic and the team can help you choose an appropriate starting point.
